How do I apply an unused ticket from one traveler to another traveler's trip?

This page tracks airline name change policies for the six largest U.S. airlines. Last updated June 1, 2026.

Whether an employee has left your company, a guest no longer needs to travel, or you want to use an unused ticket to offset the cost of a new trip for someone else, AmTrav can help you transfer an unused ticket from one traveler to another — subject to each airline's rules.

How to Request a Name Change

To transfer an unused ticket from one traveler to another, contact an AmTrav Travel Advisor by phone, chat, or email and request the name change when making the new booking. Before you reach out, have the following ready:

  • The original AmTrav booking number
  • The original airline ticket number
  • The original traveler's name

You can find unused tickets in your Unused Ticket Report.

Note: AmTrav service fees apply to bookings with name changes. Because airlines require special handling for name change tickets, our Travel Advisors spend additional time on each of these bookings.

Tip — departed employees: We recommend deactivating the profiles of travelers who have left your company rather than deleting them. Their unused tickets will still be available and easy to track in your Unused Ticket Report — inactive travelers are clearly marked with a Traveler Status of Inactive.

Airline Name Change Policies

Policies and fees vary by airline. Here's a breakdown for the six largest U.S. carriers:

Alaska Airlines (code AS, tickets starting with 027)

Alaska charges a $125 name change fee when transferring a ticket from one traveler to another, plus any fare difference and applicable change penalties (see change penalties in your Unused Ticket Report). The $125 fee is waived when the original ticket holder is an Alaska MVP Gold member. Note: the fee still applies if the new traveler is an MVP Gold but the original traveler was not.

American Airlines (code AA, tickets starting with 001)

Name changes are free on tickets issued under AAdvantage Business accounts with a BEAN or CART number. Name changes may be available on other tickets too — email AmTrav at support@amtrav.com or speak with your Account Manager to find out.

Delta Air Lines (code DL, tickets starting with 006)

Name changes are only available for clients with a full Delta corporate contract (SkyBonus/SkyMiles for Business does not qualify). Delta charges a $100 Admin Fee for name changes. Other options may be available — email AmTrav at support@amtrav.com or speak with your Account Manager to learn more.

JetBlue Airways (code B6, tickets starting with 279)

JetBlue has the most traveler-friendly name change policy of the major carriers — no name change fee. Transferring a JetBlue ticket costs only the fare difference between the old and new ticket, plus any applicable change penalties (see your Unused Ticket Report for details).

Southwest Airlines (code WN, tickets starting with 526)

Transferability depends on the fare type:

  • Wanna Get Away: Not transferable. AmTrav may be able to secure a refund — email support@amtrav.com for help.
  • Wanna Get Away Plus: Transferable with no additional fees from Southwest.
  • Anytime and Business Select: Fully refundable — you can refund the value back to the original form of payment and apply it toward a new ticket instead of transferring it.

United Airlines (code UA, tickets starting with 016)

Name changes are only available for clients with a full United corporate contract (United PerksPlus does not qualify). For companies with a qualifying United corporate agreement:

  • No name change fee
  • An add/collect applies only if the new ticket is more expensive and the original fare rules included a change fee
  • Residual values are forfeited on all United exchanges including name changes — for example, if you transfer a $500 ticket toward a $300 ticket, the remaining $200 is forfeited

Through December 31, 2026, many United tickets can also be refunded (minus a refund penalty of $150–$600). Learn more about this offer. Other name change options may be available — email support@amtrav.com or speak with your Account Manager to find out.
